Akira Featured in Animated Commercial for London Japan Cinema Festival
posted on by Andrew Osmond
This is the animated trailer for an extended celebration of a century of Japanese cinema at London's BFI Southbank, which begins in October. This celebration will include a two-month anime season in April and May 2022, details TBC. The trailer recreates images from Akira, Tokyo Story, Takashi Miike's Audition, Masaki Kobayashi's Harakiri and Takeshi Kitano's Outrage.
The screenings in October and November can be booked at the BFI website (search on "Japan"). They include numerous films directed by Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu, as well as several J-horror films from Friday October 29 to Sunday October 31, including Ring, Audition and Ichi the Killer.
The BFI's celebration of Japanese cinema was originally intended to run in British cinemas in 2020. Those plans were suspended because of the Covid outbreak in Britain, although Japanese films were streamed on the online BFI Player.
There will also be screenings and special events at cinemas nationwide. These will include a UK-wide reissue of Akira Kurosawa's classic 1954 film The Seven Samurai from October 29.
