Japan Railway's Penguin Mascot Makes TV Anime Debut in Shinkalion
posted on by Kim Morrissy
We've had a whole series of Evangelion tributes and idol appearances, but Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion the Animation isn't done yet with the quirky collaborations. Japan Railway's beloved Suica penguin mascot appeared in the 53rd episode, which aired on Saturday. The Suica penguin appeared as the partner of Subaru Azuma, the top commander of the Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute. This marks the first time the Suica penguin has ever appeared in a television anime.
In the episode, the Suica penguin stands silently while the normally stern Subaru pours out all of his grievances. Subaru appears to feel better through talking to his silent companion, so all's well that ends well!
Japanese viewers on Twitter have responded to the episode with amusement. Manga artist Kikka (Dōbutsuen de Mofumofu Osewachū, Shobonyan) posted fanart to commemorate the occasion.
