On January 28, 20 lucky winners of a contest held in October got to tour the factory of Calbee, a Japanese snack foods company, with a special tour guide: Nana Mizuki, the singer/voice actress who's the new face of Calbee's "Poterichi" line of potato chips. They also attended a surprise birthday party for Mizuki (she turned 36 on January 21), got to taste her homemade curry, and heard what Calbee's next potato chip flavor will be: Rich Homemade Curry.
The announcement was little surprise to Mizuki's fans, as she is a big fan of curry and cooperated with Le Le Marj, a favorite curry restaurant in Tokyo's waterfront Hamamatsu Town district, to develop the recipe. The flavor incorporates "the sweetness of caramel-colored onions" (onion powder) with "the hidden flavor of rich chocolate just in time for Valentine's Day" (cocoa powder). Poterichi chips are thick and ruffled.
The flavor will be available in Japanese convenience stores from February 1 to mid-March. Mizuki has been promoting Calbee potato chips since 2011. An earlier Calbee contest offered a life-size Mizuki wall sticker as a prize.
