One Sushi Chain's "Lucky Direction" Roll Includes A Whole Sardine
posted on by Bamboo Dong
February 3 marks Setsubun, the day before the beginning of spring. There are plenty of traditions, but in the Kansai region, many like to eat ehō-maki, or "lucky direction" rolls. The ehō-maki are uncut makizushi, or rolled sushi, and are customarily eaten in silence, while facing that year's lucky direction.
Over the years, more and more shops have seized the popularity of this tradition, and have begun selling ehō-maki of their own. In preparation for Setsubun, kaiten sushi chain Muten Kura Zushi has begun taking reservations for a limited number of "Setsubun sardine" ehō-maki, which include ume plum concentrate, shiso leaves, and an entire grilled sardine.
Each roll will only cost 350 yen (about US$2.94), but those who want to try one need to act fast. Only 10,000 are being offered, with February 3 being the obvious deadline.
Of course, if you're not big on sardines, the shop is also offering a number of other ehō-maki, including tonkatsu pork, eel, shrimp, and more.
