YEEAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! Awesome!! I admit, I tried playing the GameCube game, but I had a hard time with it, especially with the seasons only being eight days long. I really hope the remake makes the seasons last longer. I can't wait to play it along with the Rune Factory 3 Switch port! Very Happy

This is AMAZING news! Like FOMT, AWL is a highly beloved game that's plagued with archaic gameplay quirks so it's an amazing choice for a remake. Can't wait!

Quote:
Unlike the original game, Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life remake allows players to choose either a male or female protagonist.

And now non binary!

Your Story, Your Way ‒ With the option to play as a male, female, or non-binary protagonist, as well as all eligible marriage candidates available for romance regardless of that choice, you can truly be who you want to be.

My 3rd favorite GCN game! I hope they keep the PS2 length (the GCN version was too long!) and aim for 60fps on Switch (if not here's hoping for a PC version not long after). I still prefer the old art style but this one's not too bad and fits some characters better.

Nami best Waifu!

I joined in the DS era rather than AWL, but this cast is still close to my heart and I am SO UNIMAGINABLY PSYCHED. As a tiny queer kid, I joined the fandom after hearing tell of the (then-still-unlocalized) girl version of DS allowing you to marry the special bachelorettes. Well, “be best friends” in a special ceremony after proposing with the Blue Feather and eventually you’d have a kid together.* That ended up being an eye-opener for my 13-year-old psyche. Nami’s design and characterization did as well. Having it confirmed so quickly that yes, romance candidates aren’t marriage-locked (and even better, nonbinary PCs will be an option, that’ll be interesting) is genuinely so NICE. And fortunately, they kept Nami her gloriously butch self. I’d been worried after Mineral Town’s remake made Karen and Ran’s designs so much more traditionally ‘girly.’

* This was, predictably for 2006 or so, cut from the NA release. In fairness, its inclusion in the game at all was clearly more to do with the devs not wanting to code in two new bachelors to replace the bachelorettes who were only unlocked via their heart events OR come up with more workarounds so the special bachelorettes still existed and add more special bachelors, too. Nonetheless, it WAS gay, it WAS formative for at least one queer kid on the cusp of adolescence, and when the FOMT remake was announced a couple years ago and the franchise shifted to allowing same-gender romances, it was for at least the first two installments called ‘Best Friends’ in Japan. They may be calling it marriage outright this time. You’re still walking down the aisle in tuxes/wedding dresses. I like to think the transparent cover is them referencing that silliness from DS Cute and not ACTUALLY thinking it fools anyone but the most obtuse and automated of censors.

As an aside, it’s worth noting that localization company Natsume (who cut the best friends from DS Cute, among other things) continued developing games under the title ‘Harvest Moon’ after Marvelous split with them for localizing and the franchise became known in the west as Story of Seasons. Natsume’s Harvest Moon titles are, as of Rune Factory 5 allowing same-gender romance at launch for the international version and updated to allow it in the Japanese release, pretty much the last farm sim game in town that allow romance and a customizable protagonist but don’t allow for same gender romance. I really suspect that says a LOT about the genre’s appeal among queer players. The fanbase certainly think its absence says a bit about Natsume in a post-Stardew Valley landscape… but then, we’re also bitter we have to explain that THIS is the franchise formerly known as Harvest Moon, the ones with the title since 2014 are by a different company, and THIS FRANCHISE inspired Stardew Valley, we are not knockoffs. But I digress.
