cool, now maybe more people would enjoy FF 9, it's one of my top FF after FF7 but no ones seems to like it as much as 8 and 10.

I love the story and actual fantasy setting more so than the futuristic setting of the newer FF.

Shouldn't there be a picture of Final Fantasy IX in the headline?

Final Fantasy IX upscale backgrounds might look a little better on a smaller screen but I'll stick the PC version with mods. There's a new mod that overhauls the game including scanning the art from books and inserting it into the game, Square could've done something like this but they were lazy.

[edit]- I think I might be wrong about scanning art books after looking. Looks like they took the PSX art and did their own complex upscale. I don't really understand it but funny how fans can redo the backgrounds but Square couldn't.

Actually, out of all Final Fantasy titles, IX seems to enjoy the biggest reputation amongst fans of the franchise. Sure, VII and X have a larger mainstream following and a bigger fanbase in general, but when it comes to sheer love and passion from its fans, I think nothing can beat IX.

@Levonr: Yes, many of Square’s PC ports are embarrassments. They should have just put in the extra effort to redraw / recreate all the background assets.

This is indeed the biggest problem with Playstation games being straight pushed into HD, and another reason the Playstation Classic feels kind of pointless. Old 2D games actually hold up better, since while they don't like 100% like they used to, they still basically look really good...just you can see every pixel.

With pre-rendered backgrounds, unless they're completely redone at a higher resolution, all the 3D character stick out terribly, wandering around a bunch of blurry crap. Another reason I'm glad I still have working CRTs...

IX is actually one of the most critically acclaimed games in the franchise. However, it never got the massive cult following that the others have had.

Based off the Steam port? Eh... it shouldn't stop anyone from giving the game a shot but I have some personal gripes with the way the Steam version was handled.

Agree, it's weird for the picture to be from FF7, when the game in question is FF9.

It's nice to see Nintendo getting the Final Fantasy games that were never released on their consoles before, even if it took almost 20 years in IX's case. However, I wonder if Square will realise that people are questioning why Final Fantasy VIII is never mentioned. I've heard that the lack of a FFVIII remaster is that the source code was lost and that they have some problems with the rights of the song Eyes on Me, but still some day they will have to acknowledge it.

Article also has FF7 news though. Picture was chosen to indicate that even though it's not part of the headline.

Ummm don't know if you know this but when something acheives cult status that basically means it's moderately popular/successful.

Final Fantasy IX would more or less fall into cult status given it underperformed in comparison to VII and VIII.
