Somehow, I'm not surprised.

Sounds like the new guy is throwing his weight around, with no idea what he's doing.

I feel bad for Chinese gamers that won't be able to play a great game.

Chinese gamers can still 'import' the game via Steam so they'll have no issue playing it. It's just that Valve will get the distribution share of money instead of Tencent.

China could split into sectors, kind of like how the economic navy zones where open for trade while the rest of the country was locked down back in the day. That way not all of the country has to suffer if 1 guy messes up. It also makes it easier for them to compare within the country as for what policies work and which don't. Just look how much better Hong Kong is doing comparably to the rest of the country?

....I'm pretty sure these "pay skins" are optional and don't take away from the main point of this story about China's notoriously awful habit of misusing government power.

They´ll just play the pirated version, as usual. But going offline will require even more mind crushing grinding to progress. The true punishment.
I wonder if a version of the games comes out that puts political flags and slogs all over the place, as with PUBG.

Curious about those unspecified reasons. Perhaps the other government want info on the players like how Facebook did.
