It is sad that Dimension W got shot down as it was a solid concept with some neat ideas, and I really enjoyed watching it. Maybe it just needed to have been longer in scope so it could have had more room to shine.

I went into this one thinking it was going to be pretty similar to Solty Rei, which was a good thing in my book. However, the shine wore off pretty fast with the second arc, and then it seemed like they never nailed down what story hey wanted to tell. It also bugged me that Mabuchi basically remained abusive towards Mira throughout.

@ belvadeer - I don't think so. As Nick pointed out in his review, the problem with the show was bad story-telling, I wanted to like it, but the show just frittered away any goodwill after its reasonably promising start.

Clearly Dimension W is not a good show, but I feel that some people have unjustly treated it as the worst anime ever. I believe the reason for that is that some fans and critics created an warranted hype around it because Funimation is in the production committee.

I think the big take away from Dimension W is you can't just lazily throw together the next big break-out action anime for western fans. You need actual effort, talent and some sort of vision beyond making a hit. These is especially true when you compere it to other big new original anime series that aired on Toonami before it, Space Dandy. The difference is night and day.

I watched this after Flip Flappers and Princess Principal to see some of the early work by Studio 3Hz. Too bad they didn't get to use better writers. I'm glad to see that Studio 3Hz still got work after Dimension W because their later shows are quite good.

The best part of the show was its OP and ED honestly.
I haven't even finished the show and probably never will. It is still sitting in my FUNi queue literally half finished because things got insanely stupid insanely quick. Nothing pisses me off more than what is on paper a sci-fi series that uses its science like it is magic and thus has no real logic behind it and tries to use it as carte blanche to do whatever the hell they want. |

Like a lot of anime these days, the show felt like something where some guy said "hey I've got a neat idea for a 60-90 minute film/ova" & someone else said "great,. We'll make it into a 4 hour TV series. Work starts tomorrow"
Wasn't that sold on the dub. The main guy seemed like he was trying to do a Steven Blum in Bebop voice, but got Steve Blum in Goku Mighnight Eye instead. |

I think Dimension W could have been a good show if it told the same story over twice as many episodes. The last arc just had too much going on and failed to make me care about anything that was happening, which I think could have been solved by slowing the pace down and providing more context.

I agree, the show's not great but there's a lot worse out there. I think this show got extra scrutiny because people either got over-hyped because Funi was involved, or were extra critical of it because Funi was involved and were looking for any chance to say "See what happens why you let American companies touch our anime" |

You should also check out the OVAs OP. I agree. I made it through as much of this show as I did solely because of the OP and ED, both of which are fun, upbeat, and technically very impressive. The animators responsible for both of them are also two of my absolute favorites Shinya Takahashi and Ryouma Ebata. |

In which people continue to try and dissuade me from liking Dimension W in spite of its "obvious" flaws because they treat their opinion like the only one that matters. "It's just not very good", my ass, I'm gonna like it and you're not gonna stop me!
(But seriously, the biggest problem with the limited edition DVD/BD set I bought is the lack of the OVA episode on the DVD portion. It's the entire reason I bought the d*mn thing, don't I deserve at least that much?) |

One man's trash is another man's treasure... Well, this is my trash. I couldn't even finish it, and I tend to like sci-fi quite a bit. I got to the part where they go to that island, and that... that was all I could stomach.
I didn't like the MC. I didn't like the story. I didn't like most of the secondary characters. And I didn't really care what happened to anyone by the time I gave up on it. But I agree with the reviewer that the #1 thing that sank this show was the Story was horrid. It promised a lot at the beginning, and I got hopeful... but then it just fell off a cliff. This was worse than what happened to Fractale, which was also pretty awful. Hmm... Okay, maybe *as bad* as Fractale. They were both so terrible that comparing the two in a "this was worse" sort of way is largely pointless. Now I'm going to go back to trying to forget I ever watched any of this disappointing show. |

To be fair, this anime was a complete mess because they THROUGHLY rushed the whole source material, resulting in leaving a lot of explanations and world building proper presentation out, character development and interaction falling flat and even unidimensional at times, and of course, the storytelling and execution becoming... garbage at best.
If I recall correctly, they adapted 8-10 volumes full of lenghty text in most of its pages, all of it + a part that wasn't even out in the manga yet at the time in 12 episodes. You could compare that to adapting, I don't know, Boku no Hero Academia up to the next 2 not yet animated arcs in the manga. In only 12 episodes. The manga is actually quite nice, I would recommend giving it a try. |

So it wasn't a wise investment on Funimation? I can not recall the show being bad though. I only dropped it because I had other stuff to watch.
