The one major awkward point is Andre's voice - instead of the simpering but still generally human tone of the original, Sonny Strait plays him as if his nose is pinched and has a mouth full of food, garbling basically all of his lines.

I was hoping you would say he sounded like Gollum, but oh well. Still agree it was pretty unnecessary.

Nope. It was changed to a line similar to the original translation.

Glad everyone at FUNi managed to grow up and become adults. Just kidding, the Fonzie line still doesn't work. Yeah, reference a 40 year old show that only people under 40 who bothered to watch Nick at Night remember.

Thats great to hear. I wasn't going to consider buying this if that trash line was left in tact.

Does this not include the OVA? Because that adapted manga material as well, around 5 or 6 chapters I believe.

Dub should've got a D score. I prefer dubs most of the time but this was vastly inferior and less enjoyable than the sub. TPTB spared no expense on the best seiyuu; something I think any fan can appreciate for their favorite adaptation. Dubs only seem to take that cue when it's a high profile shonen title

Guess karma does exist though since almost every cast member of the dub has indirectly had a slightly less successful career a year later. Funimation on some level must be aware their dub isn't liked like majority of viewers; even amazon reviews specifically point out the dub's disappointment. Usually the week of release they announce it on social media or have an 'Available Now' trailer on youtube; not the case for this title (just a couple clips a week before). Also on Monday at midnight/Tuesday mornings is when they release new or updated videos on their site (even for prior simuldubs). Again not the case. Guess they wanted to attract as little attention as possible (pre-orders that low?)

Shame one of their worst dubs in recent memory has affected an otherwise great show. I know several people who chose not to buy because they don't want a single dollar to support the dub. Some actually imported Japanese blu-rays and were willing to spend more money just to avoid rewarding the middleman for horrible decision making for its English version (casting, acting, writing, etc)

Wouldn't mind if it sold underwhelming numbers for Funimation. Then hopefully they'd never botch a dub ever again and maybe some other company can rescue it when the license expires; do a kickstarter and fund a re-dub it deserves,

The dub is fine, the preferences are fine, the cast members are all still being cast. People who don't buy this just to not support the dub are just being petty, I doubt they ever expected a huge amount of sales from Prision School because it's a very, very specific brand of comedy that's more likely to gross out a casual viewer than get them to spend 50 bucks on it. This show doesn't need a re-dub, it's fine as it is. The only thing wrong with it was the one line that they changed for the home release so it's not even important.

So numerous people who say the dub isn't fine are wrong because your opinion is more valuable? Got it!

I never said the cast members weren't still being cast; but most have less work compared to the year prior, there's a difference.

Prison School's manga is popular. The sub is popular. There are even memes of the chairman which attracts new potential fans when they want to learn its origin. Prison School could've sold very good numbers (DxD, Sekirei level or even Freezing which many label as torture porn) 'Grossing out' viewers isn't an issue for this title; it has a big fanbase, Funimation failed to appeal to them. They've botched dubs and marketing before; IIRC they actually apologized at a con for how they handled the first D.Gray-man series years ago. Kind of a miracle they ended up getting the 2nd half of it and Hallow

At no point did I ever say people's opinions were invalid, I only countered with my own.

PS was never gonna sell huge numbers, it's just piss jokes. There's no point in funneling thousands into advertising for a series that will never come close to recouping it. The issues with D-Gray man wasn't the advertising it was the constantly changing cast that turned people off.

I never said this was the dub to change all dubs, and i don't know why people expected it to be. Prison School is not a magnum opus, it only appealed to a specific form of comedy and fanservice. I'd rather them spend the money they might spend advertising this on something that doesn't have multiple scenes about people getting peed on!

I didn't notice the animation being mediocre at all while watching the show's run, so I'm guessing the direction's just that good to distract me from it.

It sold well in Japan. Success doesn't always carry over but many US anime companies like to hope they do. Are there really that many idol fans in the US who'll make Love Live! a best seller here too?

Last I checked fanservice/ecchi is still a best selling genre in any country (unless you give its fans a reason to not buy)

Also disappointing to see how limited your thinking is. Every show is some fan's favorite show and no fan wants to feel like their favorite title should be treated with less care.

All are shows treated equally by companies? Of course not, but each does deserve a fighting chance.

Marketing isn't even the main reason here. e.g. One Punch Man despite its iffy dub will probably still sell well in the US on name alone and awareness from Toonami. Viz's animation department has always been a lower priority vs its manga department so don't expect a major marketing campaign for it.

Marketing campaigns aren't even necessary to appeal to current anime fans. Most are smart enough to be aware of what's new, what's recent and upcoming release dates (they follow these updates at places like fandompost or subscribe to newsletters from retailers like rightstuf)

Prison School's dub was the main problem and all the bad press it got. Funimation could've recast the dub (as they did with their first attempt of Sgt. Frog; no I'm not talking about ADV's dub) but they probably didn't want to set a precedent for kneeling to the demand of fans who hated their casting choices otherwise they'd probably be doing it for 1/2 of the broadcast dubs they produce.

^ Hey guys, can we not do this right now? We've already had this debate about the Prison School dub so many times now.
